De Xedos-9 is de vervanger van de mazda 929. Hij kwam op de markt in 1995 maar na gebrek aan verkoop verdween hij alweer in 2001 nadat hij twee kleine faceliften kende. Hij was enkel in 4-deurs verkrijgbaar en uit 3 benzine motoren, een 2.0i, 2.3i cc en een 2.5i. De 2.3i had een speciale motor , een "miller"motor, deze had een compressor en 211 pk, en enkel in automaat verkrijgbaar. Het principe van de Miller Cycle is een verandering in de timing van de klepbediening, waarbij de inlaatklep niet sluit aan het eind van de inlaatslag (als de zuiger zijn laagste punt heeft bereikt), maar iets later, als de zuiger tijdens de compressieslag alweer naar boven beweegt. In het eerste deel van de compressieslag vindt dus geen samenpersing plaats en er kan nog gasmengsel de cilinder binnenstromen. Door de montage van een mechanisch aangedreven Lysholm-compressor wordt het effect versterkt, waarmee Mazda een beresterke V6 heeft ontwikkeld. zie artiekel
Niet elke mazda garagist kan aan deze motor werken, je moest er een extra opleiding voor volgen, en stond dan ook niet in elke toonzaal bij mazda te pronken. mazda maakte ook maar één auto model met een miller motor.
In het jaar 2000 was dit een flinke bak met tal van optie's, maar één optie vind ik er wel speciaal aan, in het glas van je schuifdak zitten zonnecellen, deze produceren zonne energie om je airco zachtjes te laten draaien als je in de zon geparkeerd staat, hierdoor koeld het interrieur en de kofferbak af, en je kan er ook je lege batterij mee opladen, jammer dat mazda deze optie niet heeft verder gezet en naar mijn weten alleen maar in de Xedos-9 heeft plaats gevonden.
De Xedos-9 was toen voor mazda wat Lexus voor Toyota is, maar Toyota heeft het een stuk verder geschopt, Lexus bestaat nog steeds en Xedos is verleden tijd. Nadien maakte mazda nog een opvolger (mazda cosmo) maar dan niet meer voor de Europese markt.
